This picture of Christopher with his fourth grade class is profound. It was just a regular school day with kids taking a picture together, but pictures like this can no longer happen. At least not for now. Because this pic was taken just 6 months before Covid-19 hit, and the world swiftly shut down due to a global pandemic. Topher was not allowed to go back to Goodwin School after the March 13th lockdown, and this class wasn't together in class as a group again. As of this writing (1/27/21), Christopher has been back to school in the building for 2 days a week for the past 2 weeks. And now, somehow, he is already a 5th grader. 4th grade ended in May. The school year ended with us at home, Christopher learning from a computer separated from friends, teachers, and the school building itself.
Which makes it a total of 10 months that he didn't step foot in his elementary school building. This past 10 months he has been doing online assignments (in the spring) and ZOOM learning with teachers (this past fall and winter up until now). When they are in school, they must wears masks at all times unless eating lunch. Days where kids gathered on the front lawn and stood close together are over. It's unheard of now, until the pandemic goes away. Christopher will be long gone from Goodwin when that happens. Our last year at Goodwin, a school we have spent the last 7 years enjoying. Soon to come to an end, in ways we never dreamed. No musicals, no art shows, no fun fairs or curriculum nights, no mother son dances or Christmas craft shows. No family fun nights or PTA events. Amazing, how a moment in time becomes so profound when the events in the world around us change so very drastically.
